Tony Todd Dies: ‘Candyman’ Star Whose Hundreds Of Credits Include ‘Final Destination’ Films & ‘Platoon’ Was 69
New York, Nov 8 (EFE).- American actor Tony Todd, known for his appearances in horror films such as ‘Candyman’ and the ‘Final Destination’ saga, died on Friday at the age of 69 at his home in Los Angeles, his representative told the specialized media outlet Deadline.
Todd (Washington DC, 1954), whose cause of death has not yet been reported, studied at the Eugene O’Neill National Institute of Stage Actors (Connecticut) and made his first screen appearance in ‘Platoon’ (1986), by Oliver Stone, alongside actors such as Willem Dafoe, Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker.
His powerful voice and his height of 1.96 metres also helped him to gradually take on new roles in films such as ‘Colors’ (1988) or ‘Bird’ (1988), until in 1990 he entered into his quintessential genre: horror.
It was then that he participated in ‘Night of the Living Dead’, by Tom Savini, and two years later he had his great role in ‘Candyman’, by Bernard Rose, where he played the spirit of the painter Daniel Robitaille who demanded justice in Chicago.
His acclaimed performance led him to participate in two more sequels of this same film.
He also appeared in other horror films such as ‘The Crow’ (1994), ‘Wishmaster’ (1997), ‘Hatchet’ (2006) and several films in the ‘Final Destination’ saga (originally in 2000), where he played the coroner who watched when death was approaching.
Until his death, he continued to participate in horror films, such as ‘Hell Fest’ (2018) or ‘Werewolf Game’ and ‘Stream’, both scheduled for release this year.
Todd also appeared frequently on television, having several roles in the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, making a recurring appearance on ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ and lending his voice to ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’, and recently playing Venom in the popular video game ‘Spider-Man 2’.
